The interior of the SY160 sensor consists of a heater and a uniform noble metal oxide semi-conductor formed on the outer surface. The exterior is encapsulated with a metal shell, with four feet at the bottom, the heating pole and the measuring pole, respectively. When the sensor encounters detectable gas, the resistance of the sensor changes. The conductivity of the sensor increases with the gas concentration. According to this conductive characteristic, a simple test circuit can be designed to convert the change of conductivity into a signal output corresponding to the change of gas concentration, so as to realize the detection of gas.

The sensor has high sensitivity to smoke and various kinds of air odors, VOC, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and other gases. When the polluted gas is encountered, the magnitude of the pollution degree is determined according to the magnitude of the change of the resistance value of the sensor.
