Wärtsilä Technology Group will provide a new 103 m (340 ft) long LNG fuel barge with a complete LNG cargo storage and processing system. The vessel will be built for Polaris New Energy (PNE) at Fincantieri Bay Shipyard (FBS) in Wisconsin, USA. This is the second of two barges of this type built by PNE at the shipyard. Both ships have ordered the same Wärtsilä solution. The first barge is scheduled to be delivered from FBS in December 2021. The latest order with Wärtsilä was placed in November 2021.

In addition to the equipment range, Wärtsilä will also provide detailed system design and all necessary integration requirements. Thanks to the elevated manifold function, the second barge will be able to load LNG from the main terminal. Wärtsilä’s leading position as a supplier of LNG systems in the shipping industry enables the company to provide solid support to shipowners and operators as its acceptance of LNG fuel continues to increase.

"After delivery, these two barges will become the largest LNG fueled barges in the United States, which further strengthens Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding's reputation as the'first choice' shipyard for LNG fueled ships. We are very pleased to cooperate again with Wärtsilä to build the second PNE Barge, we thank them for performing the first ship project in an outstanding manner," said Justin Slater, Director of Sales and Marketing at Fincantine Bay Shipyard.

“This repeat order is based on the success of the first ship’s cargo handling project and Wärtsilä’s unparalleled reputation for high-quality LNG system solutions. The North American maritime sector is increasingly using LNG as fuel to reduce its carbon footprint. A means, the project is an important complement to the supply infrastructure. Our extensive experience undoubtedly provides important support for this trend," said Kjell Ove Ulstein, Director of Sales and Marketing of Wärtsilä Gas Solutions.

Wärtsilä’s scope includes four 1,350 m3 insulated LNG cargo tanks, cargo control systems, deep well pumps, ship-to-shore transfer systems, nitrogen generators, all necessary safety equipment and systems, custody transfer measurement systems, and gas combustion units. The shipyard will start deliveries in November 2022.

The two barges will be able to transport fuel for ocean-going and inland vessels that use LNG.
