On Thursday, witnessed by the Minister of Industry Thangam Thennarasu, Speaker M. Appavu activated an oxygen generator at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.

Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TVMCH) has a medical-grade oxygen generator.

Speaker M. Appavu unveiled the 1 crore oxygen generator under the witness of Industry Minister Thannarasu, Collector V. Vishnu, Company Commissioner B. Vishnu Chandran, and Congress Member S. Gnanathiraviam on Thursday. With MLAs M. Abdul Wahab and Ruby R. Manoharan.

The installation of an oxygen generator capable of producing 600 liters of medical oxygen per minute began on September 10 and was completed on November 9. In addition, an oxygen tank with a capacity of 2,000 liters was installed for storage.

“The oxygen produced by the new plant will benefit patients in the fertility and pediatric wards. It will help save the lives of 15,000 patients every year,” said Mr. Thangam Thennarasu.

When the second wave of COVID-19 caused a large influx of patients with severe breathing difficulties into TVMCH, the hospital's medical-grade oxygen was limited and it was difficult to meet the sudden surge in demand. The oxygen provided by the Indian Space Research Organization's liquid propulsion complex in Mahendra Giri saved the hospital to a certain extent, and the oxygen tanks received from other countries saved the lives of thousands of patients.

When Sterlite Copper's oxygen plant also added a large amount of medical oxygen produced by its plant in Thoothukudi, the situation improved.

At the same time, Mr. Vishnu and Mr. Thangam Thennarasu visited two closed oxygen plants in the SIPCOT industrial parks in Gangaikondan and Sethurayapudhur. These plants have been put into use to deal with any situation.

Collector's efforts also ensured that another oxygen equipment imported from Turkey was installed at the 120-bed Koodankulam Government Hospital in July, which can produce 1 ton of medical-grade oxygen per day.

"The newly added [TVMCH oxygen generator] will effectively meet the oxygen needs of admitted patients," Mr. Vishnu said.
