Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection provides a complete firmware revision and upgrade for its GD10P infrared gas detector, which improves the performance of the product in the high-demand mode SIL2 approved application. As part of the product's continuous improvement life cycle, this milestone builds on GD10P's approximately 30 years of proven field experience in the harshest industrial environment, and further supports the provision of a longer warranty period than traditional infrared gas detection systems .

The new firmware in GD10P meets the highest functional safety standards. The safety function has been evaluated according to IEC 61508 ed. 2 The standard is based on Route 1S: requirements for avoiding (prevention) and control system failures, and Route 1H, which is based on the concept of hardware fault tolerance and safety failure scores.

The high-demand mode refers to a mode in which the frequency of operation requirements for safety-related systems is greater than once a year.

Although most safety-based applications in the process sector only require "low-demand mode" solutions, "high-demand mode" safety-critical applications are becoming more and more common. Therefore, gas detectors such as GD10P must prove their suitability and ability to comply with the latest SIL2 third-party certification.

Compared with other infrared (IR) gas detectors, the new firmware further adds differentiating factors to the GD10P, including solid-state infrared sources. Here, the optical chamber with two independent IR silicon (semiconductor) sources is strong and stable enough to be worth a 15-year warranty. This is an advantage over the standard 2-3 year warranty that traditional infrared detectors usually provide. GD10P also has heating optics to prevent condensation, HART interface, fail-safe operation, extended diagnostics and low maintenance requirements, thanks to features such as scratch-resistant sapphire lens/mirror (instead of traditional glass).

Many infrared gas detectors usually make 2-3 measurements per second, while GD10P can make 50 measurements per second. More sampling means fewer false alarms, higher accuracy, and faster response time, which in turn reduces operating costs. Since the install and forget GD10P does not require calibration, the cost is further reduced. In contrast, traditional infrared gas detectors need to be calibrated twice a year.

Due to its solid dual source, GD10P, which originated in the oil and gas industry, is very suitable for use in extremely hot, cold or humid environments. On the contrary, traditional alternatives are negatively affected by factors such as vibration, flow rate, and environmental influences (such as heat and dust), which means that their plastic filters/sinters may melt or become clogged. Compared with traditional gas detectors, other significant advantages of GD10P include a calculated lifetime of 60 years (compared to 5 years) and a T90 response of methane = 1 second (compared to <8 or 9 seconds).

Among the countless practical applications, it is worth mentioning the detection of ethylene in circulating air on large industrial machines. Most of these applications now require SIL2 gas detection in high demand mode, and GD10P provides this function without hardware redundancy. This special application requires high accuracy, otherwise it requires specific process monitoring measures, not just safety equipment. However, GD10P meets the required accuracy, allowing customers

Because each machine requires multiple inspection points, it can save equipment investment costs.

Another common example of GD10P capability is the testing of propane in industrial welding stations. After the previous experience of using the catalytic detector was not satisfactory, the GD10P proved to be an ideal choice under these dusty conditions due to the "auto-zero" self-adjustment of the detector. In addition, the large optical room provides the opportunity to send two different warning levels, indicating the need for cleaning and avoiding the need for "real-time" repairs.

A further example of the advantages of GD10P is its application to detect ethanol when monitoring the storage of perfume fragrances. The purpose is to avoid the loss of expensive perfume fragrance diluted in ethanol, possibly due to tank leakage, and to avoid the increase in ethanol concentration in a limited area. GD10P is the best solution due to its target gas selectivity (narrow band filter) and extremely low response time. These detectors have been in use for four years.

These and many other cases are based on a large installation of more than 100,000 GD10P infrared gas detectors worldwide, many of which are operating under harsh conditions. Lower cost of ownership is another advantage, as only one detector is required for each system, instead of several low-demand SIL2 certified detectors.

It is worth noting that the firmware upgrade enables Teledyne's GD10P to meet the requirements of the latest third-party certification advancements, and strengthens confidence in the platform's traditional feature set. Coupled with in-depth innovation based on real-world data used for decades of field verification, GD10P has almost no limitations, regardless of the size, environment, or location of the application.
