At heart I am a nerd with minimalist design. Although I have not fully accepted Kondo Marie's advice, I am really grateful for spending money on things that help me reduce some confusion and meaningfully improve my quality of life.

Living in India, an air purifier is a must-have device, but most options on the market tend to be practical boxes. So when I reviewed the Dyson Pure Hot and Cool air purifier last summer, its simplicity and originality really impressed me. Not enough to think it paid the price of a nosebleed, but it was almost there. Tested the new Dyson Pure Hot and Cool HP07 (US$649/£549/Rs 66,900), however, it makes me believe that the higher price point is worth it, and the reasons may surprise you.

When I tried the Dyson Pure Hot and Cool air purifier last time, it was midsummer. Of course, the built-in fan is very good, but the fan is not enough in 40 degree weather, and the air conditioner makes it quite redundant. At that time, I rarely had the opportunity to try the heating function of the machine. It turns out that the real magic here is the built-in heater.

The winter in New Delhi is short and cruel. Given the year-round warm weather, houses here are not really designed for cold weather, and central heating is not the same thing. Before, there was a radiator and air purifier in my bedroom running at the same time. This is a cumbersome setup that is both inefficient and quite uncomfortable. You see, a radiator full of oil needs to heat the room forever. At the same time, the convection heater can make your skin dry and itchy.

Dyson placed it in a 200-square-foot room and it only took 20 minutes to increase the ambient temperature from 15 degrees Celsius to 22 degrees Celsius, while simultaneously having the dual functions of an air purifier. In addition, it does not have any of the disadvantages of more traditional fans or convection-based heaters.

This sci-fi-looking gadget is also quite good in air purification. Although Delhi’s ambient air quality level exceeds 500AQI, the purifier keeps the room at a healthy level below 10AQI. This is a significant improvement over the Xiaomi air purifier that I usually hover around AQI 50. The cost of Xiaomi's air purifier is one-fifth of Dyson's, which is indeed a value-for-money situation.

Interestingly, the performance of HP07 is the same as HP04, but this is mainly because there is not much change between the two models.

In fact, the only real change is that Dyson has combined a separate carbon filter and HEPA filter into a single filter, which makes it easier to replace when needed. In addition, this time, compared with previous models of filters, the entire air purifier is now HEPA 13 certified. It is difficult to judge whether this will affect the real world, but I will rest assured.

Likewise, from a design point of view, nothing has changed. The two models look almost the same, the only difference is a diagram showing the chemical structure of all the pollutants that the air purifier can purify. The Easter egg-like graphics tickles my science nerd while maintaining enough independence so that it won’t be an eyesore in the living room.

The perfect integration of the purifier with the Alexa and Google Home ecosystem will certainly not do any harm. As a smart home enthusiast, I immediately added it to my Google Home routine. The ability to trigger the heater when driving back from the grocery store has appeared on the clutch more than once.

As a tired technology critic, it takes a lot of time to impress me, but after a week of use, I fully believe that I need a Dyson Pure Hot and Cool air purifier in my life. However, this brings up a question of US$1 million, or US$649: Is it worth the huge price compared to just buying two separate and more affordable devices?

Although you will definitely pay a lot of extra for the Dyson brand, there is no denying that there is no other product similar to it. If you like me, like me, a multifunctional device that is perfectly integrated with your smart home and looks beautiful when it starts up, then you will love HP07.

Dyson Pure Hot and Cool HP07 has a higher premium than an air purifier with the same function, but it is essentially three devices in a slim package. In other words, the company recently lowered the price of the old HP04 model, but it is equally good in most regions-as of this writing, you can buy one from Amazon for $599. Given Dyson's long history of supporting its products, it makes sense for most users to choose the old model and save some money. Similarly, if you really think that heating is not required, the cost of TP04 is even lower. However, for my use case, the heating of the HP series solved this problem.

No matter which model you choose, Dyson's Pure Hot and Cool HP07 air purifiers are far from an affordable technology, but at least to me, performance and functionality help a lot in justifying the cost. Personally, I think it makes sense to spend a little bit more if the equipment can be used for multiple purposes and reduce confusion. Oh my goodness, whether Dyson's latest product will be delivered.
