On Monday morning, staff from the Berthoud Fire District, Loveland Fire and Rescue Department, and the frontline fire and rescue team spent several hours extinguishing the fire during an oil operation south of Loveland.

Rob Stumpf, BFPD's director of operations, said he received a call at around 10:01 am saying that several oil separators at an oil and gas extraction site on County Highway No. 7 south of No. 60 in Colorado were on fire.

Stumpf said that a BFPD staff member first arrived at the scene and confirmed that the three oil separators were on fire; LFRA and FRFR were asked to help and set up water lines at the scene. The separator is used to separate the oil, gas and water extracted from the well.

Stumpf said that a member of Extraction Oil & Gas advised early on that it is best not to catch fire due to the high-pressure nature of the area involved.

"We have been in a defensive state for more than an hour," he said at about 11 a.m. on Monday. "We are basically trying to make it burn on its own and keep the equipment cool through hoses."

The staff remained in a defensive position until they received a supply of fire-extinguishing foam, which they used to extinguish the fire.

"The foam forms a blanket that suppresses steam, so (the fire) does not burn," Stumpf said. "Once we have the foam in place, we will use it in our hose."

He added that the fire was extinguished around noon and the staff were able to leave the scene around 1pm

The cause of the fire is unclear. Stumpf stated that any investigation into the cause of the fire will be conducted by the company, not by the BFPD.
