Gradually, the 71st Berlin International Film Festival continued to announce selected films in its programs. Recently, the Berlin Film Festival announced selections that fall into the following categories: Berlin Film Festival Series, Short Films, Forum/Forum Extensions, Generations and Retrospectives. The German film festival stated on its official website that its programs will be gradually released, and programs named "Encounters", "Panorama" and "Perspektive Deutsches Kino" (Perspektive Deutsches Kino) will be unveiled on February 10. On the 11th, the selection of the festival will be fully announced in a video presentation held by the festival management department. Executive Director Mariette Rissenbeek will introduce it. Artistic director Carlo Chatrian will then present entries for the competition and the Berlin Film Festival special program.
The programs in the festival are as follows: competition (core film), Berlin Film Festival special program (group/discussion), series, encounter (new film vision), Berlin Film Festival short film, panorama (clearly queer, feminist and political Contemporary film (Berlin)), forums and forum extensions ("Social Art Discourse" (Berlin)), generations ("Contemporary film exploring the lives and world of children and young people"), German film perspectives and reviews (Berlin classics and tribute).
The 2020 Berlin International Film Festival is one of the last and only film festivals to be held in person before the COVID-19 lockdown takes effect in mid-March, but things will be different this year. The festival will be held in two stages. The first stage will be a completely virtual event (mainly for international viewing) to be held from March 1 to 5, 2021. The second stage will be the live festival in Berlin from June 9th to 20th. This stage will include the red carpet and celebrations. The 2021 competition will be judged by a six-member jury consisting of the winners of the Golden Bear Award for Best Picture at the Berlin Film Festival in the past.
So far, the lineup looks like a comprehensive and diverse selection of international movies. Like many other world-renowned film festivals, including the Sundance Film Festival, Berlin is seeking to expand representation and diversity. As we all know, the festival includes well-known and little-known filmmakers from all over the world to showcase truly innovative content from multiple backgrounds and cultures.
